Naiade rural clean water & energy solutions
Mission
Sustainable development in villages that lack electricity by providing disinfected drinking water, to meet the demand for safe drinking water in rural areas. Over 900.000 litters drinking water per year for just 0,01 per liter per day, resulting in
  • Better health
  • Less child mortality
  • Less drudgery for women and children
  • Reduction of use of fossil fuels
  • Better productivity and economic development
How.
Naïade purifies 2500 liters of  water per day from all biological pollution is poured ifrom the top of the container, passes through double filters. an flows under controlled conditions through the UV reactor. that  kills all bacteria  A solar panel produces the energy. Water circulation stops automatically when the filter is clogged or removed or when the UV light doesn't meet its specifications.

Naiade can be led by hand, by pump, from surface water or wells. Storage reservoirs can be used for the untreated as well as for the disinfected water to avoid 'traffic jams'.

The consequences
5 liter safe drinking water for less than about 0,01 euro per day.
According to WHO statements, every euro spent on water quality has a yield of 5-20 euro on reduction of medical costs and improvement of productivity and economic development In the field.

FAQ
How much water can be tapped at any time?
One Naïade unit will give up to 5 liters per minute of treated water if the tank is filled.

Will the unit work during cloudy days or monsoon periods?

The Solar Panel will generate sufficient electricity during cloudy days to operate the unit. The built-in back-up car battery will ensure production of safe water during dawn or dusk and heavy monsoon.

What if the water contains high level of sediment/silt (like clay or sand)?
The filters will clog more rapidly and may have to be washed more frequently; in extreme cases it may be advisable to use a sedimentation tank or trough with filter cloth such as a sari or sarong to settle/remove the solids before pouring the water in the tank.

How often do the filters need to be replaced?
The filters are of robust material and can be washed many times; if handled carefully they should last more than two years.

How often does the UV Lamp has to be replaced?
The lamp will last for 3 years if the unit is used during day-light only, or 2 years if used with back-up battery.

What maintenance is required?

The filters must be washed when flow capacity is dropping or unit overflows when filling; the solar panel must be kept dust-free by rinsing/wiping; we recommend to subscribe to a maintenance program offered by the local dealer to control/maintain the unit at least once every 6 months to guarantee a long and trouble-free life of the unit.
When do we know the UV lamp has to be replaced?

Built-in electronics will register the used time of the lamp and a light on the front of the unit will indicate when the lamp needs to be replaced by the dealer.

Can water be used if the UV lamp/unit is defective?
The built-in valve will not open if the lamp is not working or the filters are not in place.

Can we replace the filters/ UV lamp ourselves?

Filters can be replaced by the original spare filters by the user; the UV lamp has to be replaced by a qualified local dealer.

Are there any other parts that need to be replaced?
All components are designed and tested to last for more than 10 years under tropical conditions except the filters and UV lamp that are consumables.

EUROPEAN BUSINESS AWARD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
At the start of the Green Week organized by the DG Environment of the European Commission, the International Cooperation Award was presented by Mrs. Margot Wallström, European Commissioner for the Environment, to NEDAP N.V. of Groenlo, our partners in the unique Naïade Stand-Alone Water Purification Project.

"The jury was impressed with the Naïade system concluding that it has massive potential in the battle against water-borne diseases, particularly in remote areas in the developing world."

Using fresh but unsafe water from dug wells, creeks, rivers or lagoons, the Naïade Water Purification System removes particles and Nematode-eggs (worm-eggs) by a dual filtration method and disinfects the water using Ultra Violet technology, thus fulfilling the WHO requirements of multiple barrier treatment. Bacteria, Viruses and Protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia are effectively inactivated by the incorporated UV system that was designed to deliver an internationally agreed dose of 40 mJ/cm2 under worst conditions. The system is powered by a small Photo-Voltaïc panel.

Designed specifically for a long life-span under harsh climatic conditions, and easy to maintain by villagers, the system will serve up to 250 people daily with 10 litres of pathogen free drinking water at a cost of less than 0.5 cent/per person/day including amortisation and maintenance. By asking a small contribution from their fellow villagers, a womens' co-operation or other collective can provide for a family income and pay for (partial) micro-finance, and the modest costs for replacements parts and service.

Substantial savings can be made on fossil fuels (no more boiling of drinking water required), and on medication to cure water-borne illnesses. Immune systems will be less challenged resulting in overall improvement of the health of rural people. Less time will be lost by mothers to care for their sick children, more time will be available for productive work.
