IT: the artery of each organization

IT: the artery of each organization.

As a recruitment consultant I'm working more then 17 years within the IT field. With great pleasure and I will gladly explain why. In two decades I have seen this industry evolve from a purely technically oriented and inward-looking department - which wasn’t understood by anyone – to a discipline that touches every fiber of the organization and that knows how to make a difference! IT is becoming hot and will become even hotter. Where would we be without our mobile phone and internet? Without laptop, cash dispenser and Paypal. Easy does it for mankind and organization process. This convenience is possible through a very sophisticated and highly specialized knowledge and technology. Through sophisticated software and hardware plus a brilliantly devised software and infrastructure architecture it is possible to store information, process, analyze and share it. I see this miracle getting better every day. The contribution of IT to social and economic processes is enormous. The amount of information we have available online on the Internet is unlimited to the touch. The extent to which we as citizens worldwide can share information - for example via Youtube or Twitter – grows by the day.

Unfortunately every advantage has its disadvantage. For example: Without power we can not establish anything. We have all seen it before: a brief power outage at the office. Processes stop running, no transactions take place, communication with outside is very limited. In short chaos in miniature.

Globalization as we know it in political and economic terms is also involved in IT. Outsouring, Co-sourcing and Software as a Service (SaaS) realized in far off places are commonplace in today's IT landscape. Cloud computing, virtualization of storage, networking and sharing of networks, need I go on? This makes the underlying complex architecture at least at first sight diffuse. No problem as long as it works. But what if our elsewhere kept infrastructure and software solutions and no longer accessible? What If a remote site is affected by a natural disaster, economic crisis, civil war or worse?

Thanks to globalization and global connectivity our civilization is very much in shape. As long as we realize that we also depend on circumstances that we can not control ourselves. IT infrastructure has become the artery of our society. An arterial bleeding as we all know is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. Our IT industry on the whole can rely on very intelligent professionals who even look beyond today. I know from experience that they will be cracking their brains - even are doing this today - to solve this internal threat for technological progress. Because they recognize and address to the problem. What remains important is that at a strategic level each organization recognizes the importance of this danger. Same true for politics. This objective is not achieved yet. In my vision IT knowledge will be increasingly important in defining strategies and policies in our modern society. Let us trust that decision makers will consult the experts on this. Otherwise our progress will stop some day and we will be back to square one.
