Today, I formally start the process of crafting my PhD dissertation. After two years of explorations and research, led by the question how we can design systems that help people in value networks achieve a groove, I feel readier than ever to take this on.
Building on my most recent research, I will start with a framework of thought about the various perspectives on the research question, to craft the concept paper, which is the first step on the way to a finished dissertation.
The concept paper aims to capture a high level overview of my question. I will use the framework of the Dutch researcher Heinze Oost for this. Daan Andriessen, a good friend, pointed me to Heinze's structure, which was created based on a review of doctoral dissertations. It contains four perspectives, all circling around the research question:
- Knowing where you are
- Doing something relevant
- Recording what you don't know
- Plotting a route
For each perspective, I will start by improvising a set of aphorisms. Trying to bring all I can to the perspective, without trying to create a linear, logical whole yet. For these aphorisms, I will start practicing with the framework for creating aphorisms that I created as part of my Fielding journey so far.
Finally, I want to bring the perspective of CMM to this work. In CMM, we can use heuristics to take a communication perspective. Let me continue my thoughts tomorrow by building on these three blocks.
